Word clouds

Word clouds (also known as text clouds or tag clouds) work in a simple way: the more a specific word appears in a source of textual data (such as a speech, blog post, or database), the bigger and bolder it appears in the word cloud. The following two word clouds were created from the European Commission about raising awareness on discrimination:

European Commission . (n.d.). Retrieved July 12, 2017, from http://ec.europa.eu/justice/discrimination/awareness/index_en.htm

You'll notice that the word "diversity" is as big as "discrimination" and "anti-discrimination". This is because the concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.

The remaining two word clouds are from a 2008 speech on race relations of the former president of the United States; Barack Obama:

Barack Obama's 2008 speech. (n.d.). Retrieved July 12, 2017, from http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/barack-obama-2008-race-speech-in-full-rev-jeremiah-wright-us-president-orator-philadelphia-a7520331.html

You'll notice the two big words that are far more big than the others; "white" & "black". This shows how the former president wanted to emphasize and make clear how those two races are the main reason that racial discrimination exists in the United States.

  1. You made very good choices of content for your word clouds and I like the observations you made about the cloud containing words from a EC document on raising awareness on discrimination.

It's interesting that the words connected with President Obama's great speech on race in America contains mostly positive words. Certainly, there are words such as "racism" and "anger," but most of the words are hopeful: care, generation, together, young. It's apparent from the word cloud that Obama sees (and hopes) for a much brighter future, and he sees signs of change.

    Cheers,
    Joseph D.

  2. I would like you to tell about what I feel from these images.
First, when I saw this first picture, I found EU, and Europe. I didn’t know situation in Europe, but I realized that there are still discrimination in Europe, and I was shocked.
Then, I am interested in second picture. Is this a real Obama’s speech?
Black and White are important words to describe discrimination, I often see these when people talk about discrimination. Some people still care about themselves if they are black, and they hesitate. I want them to live more confident, and hope all people never mind their race.
